incidentaly

My ass isn’t really hurting anymore.  Haven’t taken any pain meds in over a week. Maybe this is just a question of new and more insidious forms of discomfort masking it, but whatever!!  I’ll take it!  I can sit comfortably!

Yesterday’s erbitux top up went just fine.  No allergic reaction this time.  I had a pretty groggy rest of the day but didn’t feel too bad.  I’m feeling fine this morning, except for the fact that I haven’t slept through the night for 4 days.  Don’t know what’s going on.  I’ve woken up at 2 the last couple of days and not managed to get back to sleep.  I was blaming steroids that the doc had me on as a preventive measure against the allergic reaction.  My doc didn’t find this compelling.  Said it was in my head.  Hmm.  He also said that my particularly bad week last week had nothing to do with all the benadryl and double dose of erbitux.  He pointed out that I’ve been through a lot..  um.  yeah.  I guess.

I asked if he was encouraged that I hadn’t broken out in a rash yet.

“No.  I’m not.  If you don’t have some sort of reaction SOMEWHERE, I’ll be disappointed.”

His general reaction to the side effects is a gleeful rubbing of the hands..   “it’s woooooorkiiiingg”

“Doc.  I feel like hell.”

“Great!”

  1. sounds kinda encouraging. but those steroids’ll get ya in trouble when ya get back on your bike. look at how they’re runnin’ lance armstrong to ground!

    haha!

good to hear you’re not in too much pain, man.

  2. I took prednisone for a horrible rash last summer and it gave me HORRIBLE insomnia. Everyone i’ve mentioned this to said it was a common side effect. Trust your instincts!

Say strong, man. You are so brave. I am glad you are chronicling this and i hope it’s helping you.

  3. Doctors are seriously mental….well some of them. They should all take “human exchange skill” (thanks carolyn!) classes. And patients should grade them. And if they fail they gotta do them again. Twice!

  4. I’ve been a long time Flickr follower and have been following all this through your blog. Just wanted to say how rad I think you are, and how inspired I am by you. Quick question: Have you thought of or experimented with medical marijuana? I don’t smoke, I don’t drink (never a drop, I’ve been Buddhist since I was 12) and drugs aren’t exactly my cup of tea, but I have been dealing with a stomach disease my whole life. It’s now just basically labeled as severe IBS. At any rate, switching to medical marijuana has helped more than I ever thought possible. I use it for pain, stomach issues, migraines and sleeping aid and it helps everytime without ever leaving me feeling like I’m in a medicine hangover.

Just was curious if you ever thought about giving it a try or adding it to your routine?

Thank you, for being such an inspiration and all around rad dude.

  5. Humor, sarcasm, exclamation points!!! So glad to see you’re feeling better! Happiness to you and yours this Thanksgiving. CW

  6. Doctors are a strange lot, on the whole. My old doc’s reaction to everything I told him was, “Well, shit, I don’t know what the fuck’s going on with you!”

  7. it sounds like your doctor is pretty good at what he does, but I’ll just say this: YOU know your body better than anyone else, including all the medical professionals who have messed around with your ass, poked all the cavities in your body, and looked at scans of all your stuff.

If YOU think something’s happening that isn’t “in your head”, don’t be afraid to press the issue.
